A Virginia teenager was shot and killed by a homeowner while reportedly filming a "ding-dong ditch" prank for TikTok.

According to PEOPLE, 18-year-old Michael Bosworth, Jr. was fatally shot on Saturday (May 3) by a homeowner during what was initially suspected to be a "residential burglary in progress," the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office said.

Suspected shooter Tyler Butler, 27, allegedly "fired shots" at Bosworth and two other teenagers as he claimed to be defending himself from a property break-in.

“The SCSO received a call for a residential burglary in progress, where a resident had fired shots,” the release read. “Deputies responded to the area of Mckenzie Lane and discovered that two individuals had sustained gunshot wounds and a third individual was unharmed."

However, the surviving teenagers said they were recording the popular "ding-dong ditch" TikTok prank, during which participants knock on someone's door and run away before the homeowner can answer. One of the teenagers showed investigators a video of the group successfully pulling off the prank earlier that night.

Butler was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Prior to his death, Bosworth, a Massaponax High School senior, was set to attend prom the day of his shooting.

Butler is currently being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on no bond.
