LeBron James Questions U.S. Response To Brittney Griner's Detainment

LeBron James believes WNBA star Brittney Griner should question whether America "has her back" as she has been deemed "wrongfully detained," but has remained in Russian captivity since February.

In a trailer for "The Shop" released on Tuesday (July 12), James joined the conversation about Griner's ongoing detainment. The NBA champ was critical of the country's efforts to bring Griner home and suggested that he may not want to return to the U.S. if he was in the Phoenix Mercury star's shoes.

"Now, how can she feel like America has her back?" James questioned. "I would be feeling like, 'Do I even want to go back to America?'"

Griner was first arrested on February 17 after authorities allegedly found hashish oil in her bag at a Russian airport.

In May, the U.S. government marked Griner as "wrongfully detained" and pledged to get the star basketball player released as soon as possible.

Though Griner remains in Russian detention and pleaded guilty to drug charges as of late, her wife, Cherelle Griner, recently spoke with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Biden also penned a letter directly to Brittney, which she has reportedly received.

James' comment on Brittney's detainment seems to have been filmed prior to reports of Cherelle's conversation with the Biden Administration. The full episode of "The Shop" is set to release on Friday (July 15).
