Penn State Men's Basketball Coach Resigns After Internal Investigation

Penn State Men's Basketball Coach Pat Chambers has resigned after the university conducted an internal investigation of his program.

"Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Sandy Barbour accepted the resignation of head men's basketball coach Pat Chambers today following an internal investigation of new allegations of inappropriate conduct by Chambers," the university stated.

Earlier this year, Chambers faced criticism after a former player named Rasir Bolton accused him of making inappropriate comments during a one-on-one conversation.

"I want to be a stress reliever for you. You can talk to me about anything. I need to get some of this pressure off you. I want to loosen the noose that's around your neck," Bolton said Chambers told him.

After Bolton went public with his claims regarding Chambers, he explained that the coach had not apologized for his comments.

"He said he was from the north and wasn't aware," Bolton said.

"Due to other interactions with Coach, I knew this was no slip of the tongue."

Bolton has since transferred from Penn State and joined the Iowa State Men's basketball program. Shortly after Bolton called Chambers out, new allegations of inappropriate conduct within the program surfaced.

"The new allegations surfaced shortly after The Undefeated's article and a review was conducted jointly by Penn State's Affirmative Action and Athletics Integrity offices," the university added.

It is unclear what new allegations were made and how Chambers may have been involved. After offering his resignation, the former Penn State coach issued a statement of his own.

"I am so proud of all our program has accomplished these past nine years, and I will be forever grateful to the Penn State community for its ongoing support," he said.

"Anyone who has ever coached -- especially at this level -- knows the exceptional amount of energy and focus it takes to deliver each and every day. This has been an incredibly difficult year for me and my family, and we are in need of a break to re-set and chart our path forward. So, I'm taking a step back to prepare myself for the next 20 years."

Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Sandy Barbour has named Jim Ferry as the team's interim head coach. Ferry enters the role with three decades of coaching experience including 19 years as a head coach.
